Hi,
Dick Prehn is my name and carving is my game. My love for duck hunting got me started in the carving world. At age 14, a much older neighbor gave me 18 wooden duck decoys. I actually messed up a couple of them. Trying to " improve" them. One was a Pintail drake that I proceeded to cut it's tail off ---- after all, it was going to break anyway, right?? As I think back now, that one Pintail could have more value than all the birds I have made since. Anyway, I "refurbished" the 18 decoys, and I think a carving seed was planted. I made enough decoys to fool the ducks. Then I got into taxidermy, photography, got married. My wife, Nancy and I, have 2 daughters, Debbie and Bonnie. The girls got involved in softball, so Nancy and I became softball coaches for about 10 years. One year we took a trip to see Mickey and Minnie. We stopped in Gatlinburg, TN. My wife spotted a carved fish in a shop in Gatlinburg. She wanted to buy it. I talked her out of it, by telling her I would carve her one when we got home. That was more or less the beginning of my second try at carving. In 1978 I became a bit more serious and began to carve realistic birds. Several years later Nancy and I drove to Ocean City, MD. to take in the Ward World Competition. That was an eye opening experience to say the least. In the long run I came home inspired to do the best that I could...After many years of teaching myself how to carve and paint, I finally went to a carving class with the late GREAT Bob Guge. His class was a big boost. As "they" say the rest is history. Now days I only carve in the winter months. In the summer months, Nancy and I enjoy fishing and spending time at our "shack" located in northeast Wisconsin.
If you have an idea for a bird you want carved, contact me and we will see what happens. NO birds are considered sold until the buyer is happy. Fair enough??
Thank you for stopping in!
Dick
